Start Scalable: Begin Building in Bazel

DevCon Mauritius, DevTalks Romania

Bazel is known as a build system optimized for massive-scale, multi-language monorepos. But is it really so complex that you need dedicated developers to maintain a build? Or is it easy to start small and scale complexity as you go? We set up a simple Bazel project that builds Java and Kotlin, and look at how it grows to any number of languages and any size, with the tools and resources that help along the way, and when you should and should not choose Bazel.

2025

Cross-organizational developer productivity

Devoxx Poland, Kraków

Working in a distributed team is one thing. Working across organizational boundaries, to deliver specialized software for development environments behind corporate silos, is another. Experiences from inter-corporate product development: how to keep your own team productive and aligned on a coherent goal, and how we could have done better in the first place.

2024

Bazel and IntelliJ: state of IDE integration

Bazel Community Day, Amsterdam

An overview of IntelliJ's Bazel support: progress on the new plugin, a demo of the experience, and the latest features. Recorded.

2023

Taming the Beast: better Bazel in IntelliJ

Scale by the Bay, Oakland

As codebases balloon in complexity, organizations turn to monorepos, and Bazel is becoming the tool of choice. That leaves a new challenge: integrating it with existing tools, above all the IDE. The ongoing work on Bazel integration in IntelliJ IDEA, and the challenges met along the way.

2023

Better Bazel in the IDE: the nitty gritty

DPE Summit

Scale is the problem: a monorepo of this size on a trusty old desktop. How we deal with it now, what we learned, and where we are headed next.

2022

How your monorepo breaks the IDE

DPE Summit, San Francisco

Dumping all your code into a single shared repository is all the rage, but tooling is only catching up. How large repositories and common patterns in them break long-standing assumptions in IntelliJ IDEA about project model, performance and user experience, and the current approaches to solving them.

2022

Bazel and IDEs: birds of a feather

BazelCon 2022, 2023, 2024

An open session on the state of IDE support for Bazel, and on what it takes to keep the IntelliJ Bazel plugin healthy, run with Mai Hussien of Google and Marcin Abramowicz.

2020

Type Touching: types at your fingertips in IntelliJ Scala

Scala meetups and online conferences

Scala's type system helps you write complex programs with fewer runtime errors, but understanding types while programming can be a challenge of its own. A live tour of type hints, implicit conversions, type of selection, smart completion and type mismatch diffs.

2019

Integrating developer experiences

Scala Days, Lausanne

IDEs increasingly play an "Integrating" rather than an "Integrated" role. How the Build Server Protocol lets IntelliJ talk to build tools such as sbt, and why that matters for coherence between the tools developers use.
